Spanish official clarifies remarks on Islamic veil

Spain’s deputy prime minister, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, has attempted to clarify controversial comments by equal-opportunity minister Bibiana Aido on the wearing of the Islamic veil.

De la Vega has said that the Spanish government’s governing principle is respect for cultural traditions. She suggested that Aido’s remarks, opposing the use of the Islamic veil, have begun “an important debate on identity and cultural traditions and differences.” (...)
