Plane bomb suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab 'joined al-Qaeda in London'

The man charged with trying to bomb a US-bound plane on Christmas Day was recruited by al-Qaeda in London, the Yemeni government claimed today.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab studied for an engineering degree at University College London between 2005 and 2008 and was known by the UK security services to have contacted radical Islamist preachers while in Britain.

Last week The Times reported how he had been groomed by al Qaeda in London and organised a conference under the banner "War on Terror Week” as he immersed himself in radical politics.

Mr Abdulmutallab, 23, a former president of the Islamic Society at University College London, advertised speakers including political figures, human rights lawyers and former Guantánamo detainees. (...)
