• ”45.000 x EuropeNews” Celebrating life in the newsstream
EuropeNews 4 July 2011
Here at EuropeNews, we take pride in staying right in the middle of the newsstream, digging out the bits and pieces that matter to the serious newsreader. Our mission is to filter away the sports, entertainment and gossip, and to promote classical, valuable journalism, news that matters
What matters is items with long-term consequences for life in Europe. Out goes short-term speculative financial news, politicians readying for the next election, and whatever accident took place on the autobahn yesterday. What remains are the subtle developments that have lasting impact, like Sharia courts in Britain, the European Union seizing more power in Greece, rising immigrant crime, religious intimidation and the police issuing yet another ”We cannot guarantee your security” statement to citizens seeking to hold peaceful street events.
All about civil liberties, in every possible way
In a way, this is all about civil liberties in practical life. It is about the free and secure life that we used to take for granted in Europe, but is now being challenged in small ways left and right. It is about democracy, citizens' rights and the equal rights of women, and about protecting the right to speak the truth against power, not least religious power. The devil is in the detail, it is said, and to identify the larger picture, quite a bit of detail is needed.
In all of this, EuropeNews remains objective. Facts reported remain facts, and although EuropeNews does have an editorial board and an editorial line, facts are first. We do not have allegience to any political party or movement, but promote news solely on basis of the general interest and the potential to be significant for future developments. This is meant to keep decision-makers informed and enable them to make well-based decisions on important issues.
Confidence in the intelligent reader
There are plenty of places on the Internet where emotion is first, where one can indulge in fierce discussions about all kinds of issues. EuropeNews is happy to be different. While we appreciate that many have a need to vent their frustrations in online discussions, EuropeNews is not a place for voicing opinions, support for this political party, or denounciation of such-and-such person.
Rather, this is the place for the intelligent reader to find what matters, from the best possible sources. Every news item is credited and linked back to the original, and to get the full story, please follow the link to the original and read it there. It is well worth it. Some articles are presented in full with the consent of the author, for which we are grateful.
Seriously non-profit
EuropeNews is run by a small group of idealists who believe in the common good of understanding what goes on in the world. Nobody is being paid for this, and EuropeNews is independent of all kinds of economical interests, be it from private enterprise, banks or governments. We appreciate that government officials find EuropeNews useful, but are not sponsored by them.
EuropeNews is even advertisement-free. Still running it isn't entirely free. We have servers to pay, occasional travel expenses for reporting, and professional-level translators and proofreaders who work for free or at a nominal cost. For articles written or translated by the EuropeNews core staff, look for articles marked with a bullet (•). To show your appreciation of EuropeNews and/or to enable us to do more original material, please consider making a donation, one-time or recurring.
Being useful is first
At the end of the day, what matters most is that EuropeNews is useful. Keeping democracy alive requires citizens to be well-informed, which is our primary aim. Well-informed citizens will in turn make well-informed choices, for the benefit of all. This is what EuropeNews is meant to be used for.
