Former US Soldier Indicted for Alleged Support of Terror Group

A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted a former Army soldier for providing material support to foreign terrorist organization al Shabaab. Al Shabaab is a Somali militant Islamist group affiliated with al Qaeda.

Authorities claim Craig Baxam, 24, traveled to Kenya in 2011 in hopes of joining al Shabaab but was apprehended by Kenyan anti-terror authorities last December before reaching Somalia.

Baxam, who served in the US Army from 2007 to 2011, has been in US custody since Jan. 6 and faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. (...)
