ABC Indonesian Islamic group rejects female circumcision ban

One of Indonesia's largest Islamic organisations has created controversy by objecting to a UN plan to ban female circumcision. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) claims that female circumcision is part of Islamic teachings and a constitutional right.

MUI chairman Ma'ruf Amin has been reported as calling on hospital and health centres in the country to provide the service to people who would want their daughters circumcised. (continue reading...)
