Microscopes were allegedly invented by the Dutch spectacle maker Zacharias Jansen (ca. 1580 - ca. 1638) just before the year 1600 or by the Dutch lensmaker Hans Lippershey (1570–1619), who is often credited with having made the first practical telescope in 1608 (a design Galileo Galilei soon improved).
